Spirit of the Blue Ridge
Spirit of the Blue Ridge
The Blue Ridge Mountains within the Appalachians are some of the oldest land masses in the entire world. They were already ancient when the Himalayas emerged. Some of the deep down bedrock dates from Precambrian and Paleozoic times hundreds of millions of years ago! Glaciers sliding down from the north stopped before these majestic mountains, pushing flora and fauna ahead of them. As the glaciers receded the landscape thrived and became a vast array of trees, plants, mushrooms, herbs and flowers. Perhaps some ancient civilizations such as Atlantis flourished here too.
This view has the Roan Mountain in the distance, one of the sacred mountains in the Blue Ridge. The Roan, peaking at 6,245 feel, is one of Earth’s oldest mountains, supporting a huge variety of plants including the beautiful pink Catawba rhododendron. Legend has it that the Roan has been a sacred site for Native American celebrations such the Solstices and Equinoxes, and new moon and full moon rituals.
